My Yard Keeps Flooding After Rain in San Antonio & What Can I Do?

San Antonio gets most of its rain in short, heavy bursts. When that happens, yards that do not drain well turn into lakes. If you are standing at your back door watching water pool up and wondering what to do, you are not alone. This is one of the most common calls I get.

Why Your Yard Is Flooding

The most common reasons yards flood in San Antonio:

The yard is graded toward the house instead of away from it. This is a grading problem and it means every rain event pushes water toward your foundation. This is the most serious issue and needs to be fixed.

The soil is compacted clay. San Antonio has heavy clay soil that does not absorb water well. Water sits on top instead of soaking in.

There is no outlet for the water to go. If your yard is surrounded by fencing or walls with no low point for water to drain out, it has nowhere to go.

A neighbor's yard drains into yours. If you are in a low spot relative to your neighbors, their runoff ends up in your yard.

What Actually Fixes It

The right solution depends on the cause, but here are the most common fixes:

French drain: A trench filled with gravel and a perforated pipe that redirects water away from problem areas. This is the most effective solution for most San Antonio yards.

Regrading: If the yard slopes toward the house, we bring in soil and regrade the yard so water flows away from the foundation. This protects your foundation long-term.

Dry creek bed: A decorative channel of rocks that guides water across the yard to a drain point. Works well for yards where water needs to travel a longer distance.

Swale: A shallow, wide channel dug into the yard that slows water down and directs it to a drain. Less expensive than a French drain for some situations.

What Not to Do

Do not just add more topsoil on top of the problem area. It will help for one season and then the same issue comes back. The fix has to address where the water is going, not just where it is sitting.
