Landscaping in Boerne, TX & Native Plants and Hill Country Design That Actually Works

Boerne is one of my favorite areas to work. The Hill Country setting gives you a lot to work with & natural rock, cedar, live oaks, and a landscape that already has character. The key is working with that character instead of trying to turn a Boerne yard into something that belongs in a suburban neighborhood.

What Works in Boerne

Native plants are the foundation of good landscaping in Boerne. Texas sage, agarita, mountain laurel, and Mexican feather grass are all plants that evolved for this climate. They need minimal water once established, they look great, and they do not require constant maintenance.

For color, lantana and salvia are workhorses in the Hill Country. They bloom through the heat, attract butterflies and hummingbirds, and come back year after year.

Rock and Hardscape

Boerne has natural limestone everywhere, and using it in your landscaping makes the yard look like it belongs there. A simple flagstone walkway, a low limestone wall around a bed, or a decomposed granite patio all look natural in the Hill Country setting and require almost no maintenance.

If you have exposed caliche or limestone in your yard, work with it rather than trying to cover it up. A well-placed rock garden with native plants looks intentional and costs less to maintain than a grass lawn.

What to Avoid

Avoid plants that need a lot of water. Boerne is outside the San Antonio city water system for many properties, and if you are on a well or a water utility with restrictions, a water-hungry landscape is going to cost you.

Avoid trying to grow a thick green lawn in full sun without irrigation. Without a sprinkler system, Bermuda or St. Augustine in full sun in Boerne will struggle through July and August.
